Why Is My Water Heater Rumbling?

What the noise actually is

The sound comes from sediment, mostly calcium and magnesium from Cobb County's hard water, settling at the bottom of the tank. The burner sits under that layer. As it heats, water gets trapped beneath the sediment and bubbles up through it, which makes the rumble. More sediment means a louder tank and a longer recovery time.

Why it matters

A sediment layer acts like insulation in the wrong direction. Your burner has to heat rock before it heats water, so your energy bill creeps up and your showers get shorter. Left long enough, the overheated tank bottom can warp or leak.

What you can do

• Flush the tank yearly. Hook a garden hose to the drain valve, shut off power or gas, and let the water run until it runs clear. Most tanks need 20 to 40 minutes.
• Check the anode rod. This sacrificial rod slows corrosion inside the tank. If it's worn to a thin wire, replace it.
• Listen for changes. A new clang or a high-pitched whine often points to a failing valve or element, not sediment.
