Is Your Sump Pump Ready for the Next Cobb County Storm?

How to test yours in five minutes
- Listen for it. During a rain, the pump should kick on before the pit is full and shut off shortly after the water drops. A pump that runs constantly or never starts has a switch problem.
- Pour test. Slowly pour a bucket of water into the pit. A working pump turns on, clears the water, and shuts off. If it cycles on and off or runs dry, the float switch is sticking.
- Check the discharge. Walk to where the pipe exits the house. Water should flow away from the foundation, not pool at the wall or run back toward the pit.
The warning signs
- A pump that hums but moves little water usually has a clogged intake or a worn impeller.
- A pump that rattles or grinds has a failing bearing and is near the end of its life.
- A pit that smells or has standing debris needs a cleaning, and the check valve needs testing.
The upgrade worth making
If your pump is more than seven years old, or if your basement has finished space, a battery backup pump is the single best investment. It runs when the power is out, which is exactly when the main pump fails. We size the backup to the pit and the lift height, not to a generic spec.
